Work in Chemistry Laboratories

In the University’s chemistry laboratories, experiments and research are carried out that involve work with many different chemicals and hazardous materials, and handling them is liable to be extremely dangerous. This requires strict adherence to the safety instructions.

The main safety principle is to reduce the probability of a severe safety incident and minimize the potential damage if such an event occurs. Therefore, laboratory managers and workers must be very careful and act as follows:

  • Safety training for each new laboratory worker and a safety refresher course at least once a year
  • Carry out the safety procedures that are appropriate for a laboratory and be sure to follow them fully.
  • Be familiar with the first aid means and emergency equipment in and near the laboratory.
  • Work according to tested and approved processes.
  • Refrain from storing large quantities of hazardous materials.
  • Store materials according to risk groups.
  • Correct handling of the chemical waste created in the laboratory.
  • Carry out the control and enforcement procedures by the laboratory managers, the safety officer in the departments and faculties and the Safety Unit.
  • At the beginning of each year the laboratory manager / the principal investigator will fill in an annual report for the laboratory and a report of implementation of safety training in the laboratory /group and send it to the Safety Unit in the University.
